My first visit to Roumania was quite an eye opener. The city of Bucharest showed remains of past splendours but the people were all “grey” and there was an evident lack
of commercial goods everywhere. In Timisoara, hot water was rationed in the hotel to just an hour in the morning, between 6:00 and 7:00. The car journey from Timisoara to Bucharest was fascinating. The
small villages were all run down and poverty was an obvious problem. In one village we were stopped for speeding even though we weren’t exceeding the speed limit. A “donation” to the policemen of a
pin-up calendar (don’t forget this was twenty years ago when it was not politically incorrect to have such things) got us on our way again.
